Don't just throw any solar powered lights that are broken or not working in the garbage. Take them apart and remove the solar cells.
Give the removed photocells and LEDs, if they can be saved, to local schools or community groups such as the Scouts so that they can be used for solar powered projects.
Recycle the batteries or reuse them in new projects if they are still viable.
Recycle as much of the remaining plastics and metal as well.
